تقارنهaccompanies him فيin كلevery أمرaffair فضيلةa virtue
تقارنه في كل أمر فضيلة
ويلبسand he wears فيin أطوارهhis changing states ماwhat يلائمis fitting
ويلبس في أطواره ما يلائم
A virtue accompanies him in every affair.
And in his changing states he wears what is fitting.
تمرproceed القضاياaffairs طيباتagreeably بحمدهwith praise for him
تمر القضايا طيبات بحمده
فكلso every مقامstance أوor سلوكcourse of conduct مكارمnoble deeds
فكل مقام أو سلوك مكارم
Affairs proceed agreeably, with praise for him.
So every stance or course of conduct is noble.
كأنas though مياهwaters البدرthe full moon فيin ماءthe sheen of وجههhis face
كأن مياه البدر في ماء وجهه
يرقرقهاsets them rippling منfrom جوهرthe essence of البشرcheerfulness ساجمa pouring shower
يرقرقها من جوهر البشر ساجم
As though the full moon’s waters, within his face’s sheen,
Were set rippling by a shower from the essence of cheerfulness.
يحلhe settles وفيand in الآفاقthe horizons رحلةthe journey of عزمهhis resolve
يحل وفي الآفاق رحلة عزمه
فإنthen if سارhe journeys فالأفلاكthen the celestial spheres تلكthose العزائمresolves
فإن سار فالأفلاك تلك العزائم
He settles, while his resolve journeys across the horizons.
And should he journey, those resolves are the celestial spheres.
لهhis is الحكمauthority بعدafter اللهGod فيin أمرthe affairs of دهرهhis age
له الحكم بعد الله في أمر دهره
ولكنbut عليهover him مكسبthe earning of الحمدpraise حاكمa ruler
ولكن عليه مكسب الحمد حاكم
His is authority, after God, over the affairs of his age.
Yet the earning of praise holds sway over him.
وماand not تكسبconfer الأسبابcircumstances محمودthe praiseworthiness of فعلهhis deeds
وما تكسب الأسباب محمود فعله
ولكنbut لهhe has خلقa trait منof الحمدpraise لازمinseparable
ولكن له خلق من الحمد لازم
Nor do circumstances make his deeds praiseworthy;
Rather, praiseworthiness is an inseparable trait of his.
