I grew accustomed to them; I have no excuse for committing them
save the baseness of my nature and the violence of my desire.
save my innate baseness and the intensity of my desire.

The Qur’an awakens me amid passion’s heedlessness,
The Quran rouses me amid the heedlessness of desire,
yet I turn away from it, persisting in my neglect.
yet I turn away from it, persisting in my heedlessness.

It was not denial that turned me aside, but a passion
It was not denial that turned me away, but desire
that overwhelmed me until it became my very mark and adornment:
that overwhelmed me until it became my defining trait and my adornment.

Quick to seek the pleasures souls find in desire,

slow to do good, with a blemished record.

When the call of truth rings out, I turn aside,
as though, when it passes my ear, I were deaf.
as though my ear went deaf when the call reached it.

Your generosity, my Lord, is my plea and my means of approach.
then Your generosity, my Lord, is my plea and my means of drawing near.
