My God, You are ever appreciative of the little an obedient servant earns,

with the finest recompense, which never perishes with time.

    فشكرك عنها لي مجرد نعمة

    Whatever righteous deeds there may be, You appreciate them;

thus Your appreciation of them is sheer grace to me.

And what have I that warrants thanks from You to me,

even if I brought a mote's weight of acts of obedience?

    فأين تعالى اللّه فضلي ومنتي

    And gratitude is only a response to a favor;

so where—exalted is God—are my bounty and my favor?

And even if I lived for ages and brought their like

in good deeds and acts of obedience, as numerous as all created beings,

and offered the striving of all beings in worship,

by rending my limbs and exhausting my lifeblood,

and those You created fell short of me, along with all whom

You will create, my Lord, in the stations of my nearness to You,

it would not be due to my worth that You thanked me

for a blessing You bestowed on my feeble strength.

Nor did You limit Yourself to giving without praise.

Praise be Yours for graciously thanking creation.

Praise be Yours; gratitude in full belongs to the True One alone,

and is, in truth, beyond our power.

So grant me perfect gratitude for every blessing,

though my gratitude brings no blessing in return.
