وسترت يا غفار كل قبيحة

My God, You graciously made the good manifest,

My God, You have revealed what is beautiful out of grace,

and concealed, O All-Forgiving, every ugly deed.

الهي ما في القبح كالذنب بارزت

به نفس مخلوق جلال الالوهة

My God, no ugliness equals the sin with which

My God, nothing is as ugly as the sin with which

the soul of a created being defied the Majesty of Divinity.

الهي يعيش العبد ما عاش عاصياً

وأنت الهي ساتر للخطيئة

وأنت الهي ساتر للخطيئة

My God, the servant lives, for as long as he lives, disobedient,

while You, my God, conceal his sin.

يبارز بالعصيان مولاه عالماً

بأنك محصي جهره والخفية

He defies his Master through disobedience, knowing

He defies his Lord through disobedience, knowing

that You reckon both what he reveals and what he hides.

that You count his open deeds and what is hidden.

الهي بئس النفس نفسي تسوقني

الهي بئس النفس نفسي تسوقني

إلى غير ما ترضاه غير حيية

إلى غير ما ترضاه غير حيية

My God, what a wretched soul mine is! It drives me

My God, how wretched a soul is mine! It drives me

toward what does not please You, utterly shameless.

toward what You do not approve, without shame.

تخوض غمار الغي قد حال بينها

تخوض غمار الغي قد حال بينها

وبينك منها غمرة فوق غمرة

It plunges into error’s engulfing depths; there has arisen between it

It plunges into the depths of error; between it

and You, from that error, wave upon wave.

and You stand floods of its own making, one upon another.

وأنت تغذيها وأنت تبزها

بعافية في كل حال ونعمة

بعافية في كل حال ونعمة

Yet You nourish it, and You clothe it

You nourish it, and You overwhelm it

in well-being in every condition, and in blessing.

with well-being in every state, and with bounty.

عدوت إلى المحظور حتى اقترفته

وأنت ترى يا رب سيىء خطوتي

I rushed toward the forbidden until I committed it,

I rushed toward the forbidden until I committed it,

while You see, O Lord, my wicked step.

الهي اعترفت الآن بالذنب تائباً

الهي اعترفت الآن بالذنب تائباً

إليك فعفواً يا الهي حوبتي

My God, I now confess the sin, repentantly

returning to You; so pardon, my God, my offense.

وإني لغفار لمن تاب ردني

إليك فلا تردد متابي بخيبة

And [You have said], “Indeed, I am ever-forgiving to whoever repents”; bring me back

فجد لي بمحو السيئات العظيمة

My God, just as You have spread Your concealing veil wide,

My God, just as You have spread Your veil so fully,

graciously grant me the erasure of my grave sins.

so be generous to me by erasing my grievous sins.
