ما على المستهام إثم بهذا

وأرى الإثم راجعاً للحبيب

وأرى الإثم راجعاً للحبيب

No sin lies upon the love-maddened for this;

The love-stricken bears no sin for this.

I see the sin returning to the beloved.

And I see the sin falling back on the beloved.

The lovers’ rapture is a kind of madness,

Lovers’ infatuation is a kind of madness.

and hearts are where moral responsibility lies.

And the basis of moral responsibility lies in hearts.

مكنوني أعض منه كما شئت

مكنوني أعض منه كما شئت

وخلو بيني وبين الذنوب

وخلو بيني وبين الذنوب

Give me leave to bite of him as I please,

Let me take a bite of him as I wish.

and leave me alone with the sins.

And let nothing stand between me and sins.
