لذاتك مختاراً بعز الألوهة

You rose in greatness above all, O Exalted One,

You are exalted above all, O Majestic One,

for Your own Essence, freely choosing, in the majesty of divinity.

لك الكبرياء البحت يا متكبراً

لك الكبرياء البحت يا متكبراً

عن النقص في الذاتية الأقدسية

عن النقص في الذاتية الأقدسية

Yours is pure grandeur, O Exalted One,

Yours is unalloyed majesty, O You who are exalted

far above all deficiency in the all-holy Essence.

beyond imperfection in Your most holy essence.

تكبرك الاسمى عن النقص مطلقاً

تكبرك الاسمى عن النقص مطلقاً

تضاءلت الأفهام عنه وكلت

تضاءلت الأفهام عنه وكلت

Your supreme greatness is utterly beyond imperfection.

Your supreme exaltation, utterly beyond imperfection—

Understandings dwindle before it and grow weary;

understanding dwindles before it and grows weary.

وغاية ادراك العقول حسورها

وغاية ادراك العقول حسورها

وتشطينها بالعجز في بحر هيبة

وتشطينها بالعجز في بحر هيبة

the furthest reach of minds’ perception is their exhaustion,

And the utmost reach of minds' understanding is their exhaustion,

and their being cast helpless and far off in a sea of awe.

and their being driven far off by helplessness in a sea of awe.

وما حجبت عن درك ما لا تطيقه

وما حجبت عن درك ما لا تطيقه

ولكن وراء الطور أمر الحقيقة

ولكن وراء الطور أمر الحقيقة

Nor is there any veiling from grasping what cannot be borne;

They have not been veiled from grasping what exceeds their capacity;

but beyond the Mount lies the mystery of Reality.

but the matter of reality lies beyond that sphere.

وماهية الادراك نقص على السِوى

وماهية الادراك نقص على السِوى

فكيف به في كبرياء الألوهة

فكيف به في كبرياء الألوهة

The very nature of perception is a deficiency in all besides You—

And understanding, by its very nature, is deficient regarding all besides You;

so how would perception fare amid the grandeur of divinity?

so how could it grasp the majesty of divinity?

وكيف يخوض الوهم في أبحر العمى

وكيف يخوض الوهم في أبحر العمى

ومنقطع الأفكار دون الهوية

ومنقطع الأفكار دون الهوية

How can imagination plunge into oceans of blindness,

And how can imagination plunge into the seas of blindness,

when thoughts reach their limit short of the Divine Identity?

when thoughts reach their limit short of the divine Essence?

وهيهات عز الأمر وانطمس الصوى

وهيهات عز الأمر وانطمس الصوى

وغاب عن الألباب كنه القضية

وغاب عن الألباب كنه القضية

Far from it! The matter is unassailable, and the guideposts are effaced;

How far beyond reach! The matter is elusive, and the waymarks are effaced,

the essence of the matter is hidden from discerning minds.

and the matter's true nature is hidden from the intellects.

تدانيت لي في كبريائك رافعاً

تدانيت لي في كبريائك رافعاً

لقدري وما أسلمتني لمضيعة

لقدري وما أسلمتني لمضيعة

You drew near to me in Your grandeur, raising

You drew near to me in Your majesty, raising

my worth, and did not consign me to ruin.

my standing, and did not abandon me to ruin.

وشددت أزري حين حطني الورى

وشددت أزري حين حطني الورى

بحولك ربي لا بحولي وقوتي

بحولك ربي لا بحولي وقوتي

You strengthened my back when humankind brought me low,

And You strengthened my back when humankind brought me low,

through Your might, my Lord—not through my own might and strength.

by Your power, my Lord, not by my power and strength.

فهب لي على ما صد عنك تكبراً

فهب لي على ما صد عنك تكبراً

وذل خضوع في رضاك وخشية

وذل خضوع في رضاك وخشية

So grant me a proud rising above all that turns me from You,

So grant me proud disdain for whatever keeps me from You,

and the humility of submission in seeking Your pleasure and in reverent fear.

and humble submission in seeking Your pleasure, and reverent fear.
