Al-Muhanna has returned, praise be to God, and there has been a change

in the wire's report, after anxiety and sorrow.

    والعين أصدق أنباء من الأذن

    A report may be wrong, and verification reverses it;

and the eye tells truer tidings than the ear.

Destinies run their course; no planning can restrain them,

nor is anyone shielded from their onsets.

Safety comes with calamities closing in,

and a man perishes though no calamities were there.

And sometimes a man rejoices at what was feared,

when it comes to him, bound to a good outcome.

And sometimes a soul panics at a calamity,

though at root it is like a phantom passing through a doze.

And sometimes the sparrow survives within a snare,

and sometimes the knife reaches it within its nest.

A man may take up his shield in an undertaking,

yet inevitable fate carries the shields away.

And a man drinks from a cup that delights him,

and sometimes gathers bees' honey from boils.

And the secret of the matter is to make the discerning aware

that destinies cannot be led by a halter.

And whatever God has decreed is inevitable,

in safety and fear, in travel and at home.

And human well-being reaches its end

in being taken while on guard, or taken while at rest.

And we are amid terrifying days,

whose ugliness appears in the guise of beauty.

So let the discerning remain amid them, expecting no

pledge but their familiar, tainted pledge.
