You dealt patiently with me where justice was due, in forbearance,

and my crime, O Forbearing One, is the gravest of crimes.

And one who does not fear being eluded is not goaded

to swift punishment by the commission of a sin.

You dealt patiently with one who disobeys You, granting respite, that perhaps

he might repent; otherwise, he cannot escape.

And where can the servant flee from his Lord's dominion?

Nor has the true nature of a mote been hidden from Him.

And nothing deludes one who disobeys God like His forbearance,

as though sins were hidden from Him—exalted is He.

My God, if You exacted punishment for every lapse,

You would have left no ants crawling upon the earth.

But You delay seizing them until appointed times,

that perhaps a breath may bring some repentance.

How long shall I transgress while the Forbearing One veils my faults?

And one day my disgrace must come to light.

Sins hurl me from a lofty summit,

while my soul is given to play, vanity, and heedlessness.

    فصفحا عظيم الحلم أطلق رهينتي

    My God, my soul is fearful because of its sins;

so pardon me, O You of great forbearance; free my captive soul.

Even if my sin were the weight of the universe, it would not be

beside God's forbearance, even the weight of a mote.
