You hold back—if You do—from nearness to Your favor,

Through eternal knowledge and the dictates of Your will.

Supremely exalted are You; You have wronged none You hold back.

Whatever You decree is, in truth, founded on justice.

And in the wisdom of delay lies the might of One who subdues,

And a Lord's governance, and the impossibility of partnership.

    فما يقتضي التقديم فيه بحيلة

    You hold back what You have held back in its settled place;

So no stratagem can secure advancement for it.

And whoever delay confines in the fetter of its decree,

That one is a captive whom no ransom can redeem.

And how can remoteness escape the bounds of its helplessness,

If You do not will to advance it so much as a single step?

And in the gaze of the Name, the Delayer, lies a power

That strips all powers of every capacity and strength.

    وقدمت خلقاً رتبة قبل رتبة

    You looked to the rear and held back their steps;

And You advanced creatures, one rank before another.

Within both gazes, the command and decree

Accord with the decree of the pre-eternal gaze.

By the right of Your most exalted Name, the Delayer, restrain me,

Through it, from my unruliness, from desire in which lies my misery.

And turn my enemies away from the ends they desire,

For they harbor evil that has encircled my solitude.
