At Your door, O Bestower, I have become destitute and disappointed,

At Your door, O Bestower, I have become destitute and empty-handed,

bereft and sorely afflicted, in the bonds of calamity.

And I have become bereft, exhausted in affliction’s bondage.

ببابك يا وهاب أخلصت رغبتي

ببابك يا وهاب أخلصت رغبتي

وأوردت آمالي وأنزلت بغيتي

وأوردت آمالي وأنزلت بغيتي

At Your door, O Bestower, I have devoted my desire wholly to You,

At Your door, O Bestower, I have made my yearning sincere,

bringing forth my hopes and laying down my need.

And brought my hopes to water and lodged my desire there.

عنائي عناء المجهدين وحالتي

بعلمك فاجبر عيلتي وأشف غلتي

My suffering is the suffering of the sorely tried, and my condition

My suffering is that of the exhausted, and my condition

is known to You—so mend my poverty and quench my burning thirst.

مواهبك اللهم من غير حيلة

تواصلها تترى وخير وسيلتي

Your gifts, O God, come without any contrivance;

Your gifts, O God, without any contrivance,

they continue in succession, one after another, and are my best means.

You keep sending in succession, and they are my best means of approach.

ووهبك يا وهاب ليس لعارض

ووهبك يا وهاب ليس لعارض

وليس لأغراض ولا عوضية

وليس لأغراض ولا عوضية

Your giving, O Bestower, is not prompted by circumstance,

And Your giving, O Bestower, is not prompted by an incidental cause,

nor by ulterior purposes, nor in expectation of return.

Nor is it for any aims or recompense.

وأنت الجواد الحق لا وهب مطلقاً

وأنت الجواد الحق لا وهب مطلقاً

من الخلق إلا منك يا ذا العطية

من الخلق إلا منك يا ذا العطية

You are the true Generous One; no absolute gift

And You are the truly Generous One; no gift whatsoever

comes from creation except from You, O Possessor of bounty.

Comes from creatures, but only from You, O Lord of bounty.

وكيف حصول الوهب ممن ملكته

وكيف حصول الوهب ممن ملكته

وليس له في الملك ذرة شركة

وليس له في الملك ذرة شركة

How could a gift be obtained from one whom You own,

And how can giving come from someone You own,

who has not an atom's share in the dominion?

When he has not an atom’s share in dominion?

ولا ينبغي للوهب من غير مالك

ولا ينبغي للوهب من غير مالك

ولا ينبغي للوهب بالسببية

ولا ينبغي للوهب بالسببية

Giving cannot rightly issue from anyone but an owner,

And giving cannot rightly come from anyone but an owner,

nor can giving rightly be ascribed to mere causality.

Nor can giving rightly be ascribed to causality.

فما الوهب في التحقيق إلا لواهب

فما الوهب في التحقيق إلا لواهب

غني ملي مالك كل فطرة

غني ملي مالك كل فطرة

For in truth, giving belongs only to a giver

For giving, in truth, belongs only to a giver

who is rich, fully able, and Owner of every created being.

Self-sufficient and wealthy, the owner of every created nature.

الهي هب لي من مواهبك الغنى

الهي هب لي من مواهبك الغنى

عن الخلق في نفسي وفي واجديني

عن الخلق في نفسي وفي واجديني

My God, grant me from Your gifts the wealth of independence

My God, grant me, from Your gifts, freedom from dependence

from creation, within myself and among all who encounter me.

On creatures, for myself and for those who encounter me.

الهي هب لي رحمة لدنية

الهي هب لي رحمة لدنية

فكل الغنى في الرحمة اللدنية

فكل الغنى في الرحمة اللدنية

My God, grant me mercy from Your own presence,

My God, grant me mercy from Your own presence,

for all true wealth lies in mercy from Your presence.

For all freedom from need lies in mercy from Your presence.
