What can a man do when passion swells within him,

What can a man do if passion grows within him,

while the one he loves is preoccupied with loving another?

and the one he loves is absorbed in love for another?

إن رام تركاً فهذا لا سبيل له

إن رام تركاً فهذا لا سبيل له

أورام صبراً فعَقَد الصبر محلولُ

أورام صبراً فعَقَد الصبر محلولُ

If he tries to forsake his love, no path to that is open to him;

If he seeks to forsake it, there is no way for him to do so;

or if he seeks patience, the knot of patience comes undone.
