طنبت في الوادي المقدس خيمتي

ورعيت بين شعوبه أغنامي

I pitched my tent in the holy valley,

And grazed my sheep among its ravines.

قل للذئاب الكاسرات تفسحي

عز الحمىّ وأعز منه الحامي

Tell the ravening wolves: "Make way!"

Mighty is the sanctuary, and mightier still its protector.

فلقد نزلت على عظيم قادر

عز الجلال إليه والأكرامِ

For I have lodged with One great and powerful;

To Him belongs the glory of majesty and honor.

يقضي ولا يقضى عليه نزيله

لو كاده الثقلان غير مضامِ

He decrees, and none decrees over Him; His guest,

Even if humans and jinn plot against him, suffers no wrong.

من بعد ما طردت كل مطرد

ونشبت بين أظافر الأيامِ

After I had been driven away at every turn,

And caught between the claws of days,

سترتني الأسماء في ملكوتها

فحجبت عن فهمي وعن أوهامي

The Names veiled me within their dominion,

So I was hidden from my own understanding and imaginings.

وسقتنيَ الأسرار شربة ذوقها

فعجزت عن تعبيره وكلامي

And the mysteries gave me a draught of their savor,

So neither I nor my speech could express it.

وذكرت من هو في الحقيقة ذاكري

وحقيقتي لا شيء وهي مقامي

And I remembered Him who, in truth, remembers me;

And my reality is nothing, and that is my station.

وحقيقتي أني محوت حقيقتي

إذ ثبتها صنم من الأصنامِ

And my reality is that I effaced my reality,

For affirming it is an idol among idols.

لما محوت اسمي باسم محققي

مكنت فوق رؤوسهم أقدامي

When I effaced my name with the name of Him who makes me real,

I planted my feet above their heads.

أنفقت وجداني لوحدة موجدي

وعلى سواه حقائق الاعدامِ

I expended my awareness for the oneness of my Maker,

And upon all besides Him lie the realities of nonbeing.

وإرادتي إياه ظل إرادة

سبقت له في النقض والابرامِ

And my desire for Him is the shadow of a will

That was already His, in undoing and making firm.
