When I die, bury me beside the base of a grapevine,
So its roots may water my bones in the earth.
ولاand do not تَدفِنَنّيbury me بالفلاةِin the open desert فإنّنيfor I
أخافُI fear إذاwhen ماindeed مُتُّI die أنthat لاnot أذوقُهاI taste it
Do not bury me in the open desert, for I
Fear that, once dead, I will never taste it again.

I seek it early at sunrise, and sometimes
Its evening draught comes to me after dusk.
وللكأسِand for the cup والصهباءِand the tawny wine حقُّa right منعَّمٍof a favored one
فمنso among حقّهاits rights أنthat لاnot تُضاعَbe neglected حُقُوقُهاits rights
The cup and tawny wine deserve a favored one's care;
Their rights, indeed, should not be neglected.
أقوِّمُهاI value it زِقاًby the wineskin بِحِقِّrightly بِذاكُمُby that of yours
يُساقُis brought اليناto us تَجرُهاyou draw it ونَسوقُهاand we lead it
I value it by the wineskin, and rightly so;
It is brought to us; you draw it along, and we lead it.

إذاwhen ماindeed نِساءُwomen الحيّof the tribe ضاقتconstricted حُلُوقُهاtheir throats
Yet alongside drinking wine, I have a protective zeal
When the women of the tribe find their throats constricted,
وأُعجِلنَand they are hurried عنfrom شدِّfastening المآزرthe waist-wraps وُلَّهاdistraught
مُفَجّعةَgrief-stricken الأصواتِin their voices قدalready جَفَّhas dried ريقُهاtheir saliva
And are hurried from fastening their waist-wraps, distraught,
Their voices stricken with grief, their mouths gone dry.
وأمنعُand I protect جارَthe neighbor البيتِof the house مماfrom what ينوبُهُbefalls him
وأكرِمُand I honor أضيافاًguests قِراهاtheir hospitality طُروقُهاtheir arrival by night
I shield my neighbor from whatever befalls him,
And honor guests who arrive by night with hospitality.
