أتوبُI repent إِلىto اللهGod الرحيمthe Merciful فإنهfor indeed He
غفورٌever-forgiving لذنبِof the sin of المرءِa person ماso long as لمnot يُعاودِhe repeats it
I repent to God, the Merciful, for indeed He
I repent to God, the Merciful, for He
forgives a person’s sin so long as he does not return to it.
is forgiving of a person's sin, so long as they do not repeat it.
ولستُand I am not إِلىto الصَّهباءِthe tawny wine ماas long as عِشتُI live عائداًreturning
ولاnor تابعاًfollowing قولَthe words of السفيهِthe fool المُعاندِthe obstinate one
Never again shall I return to tawny wine as long as I live,
And I shall not return to tawny wine as long as I live,
nor heed the words of the stubborn fool.
nor follow the words of the obstinate fool.
وكيفَand how وقدand already أعطَيتُI have given ربَّيmy Lord مَواثِقاًsolemn pledges
أعودُI return لهاto it واللهُand God ذوpossessor of العرشِthe Throne شاهديmy witness
And how could I, when I have given my Lord solemn pledges,
And how, having given my Lord solemn pledges,
return to it, with God, Lord of the Throne, as witness?
could I return to it, with God, Lord of the Throne, my witness?
سأترُكُهاI shall abandon it مَذمومةًblameworthy لاnot أذوقُهاI taste it
وإِنand even if رَغِمَتare rubbed in the dust فيهاover it أنوفُthe noses of حواسديmy enviers
I shall forsake it as something accursed and never taste it,
I shall abandon it as blameworthy and not taste it,
even if my envious foes’ noses are thereby rubbed in the dust.
even if my enviers' noses are rubbed in the dust over it.
