ألَمdid ... not? تَرَyou see أنّthat الدهرtime يَعثُرُtrips up بالفتىthe young man
ولاand not يستطيعُcan المرءُa person صَرفَaverting المقادِرِthe decrees of fate
Have you not seen how Fate trips up a young man,
Have you not seen that time makes a young man stumble,
and that no man can avert what destiny decrees?
And a man cannot avert the decrees of fate?
صَبرتُI endured patiently فلمso I did not أجزَعlose heart ولمnor did I أكُbe طائعاًsubmissive
لحادثِto a calamity دَهرٍof time فيin الحكومةِjudgment جائرِunjust
I bore it patiently: I did not lose heart, nor did I willingly submit
I endured, so I did not lose heart, nor did I yield
to a stroke of Fate, unjust in its judgment.
To a calamity of time, unjust in its judgment.
وإنّيand indeed I لذوsurely possessed of صَبرٍpatience وقدand already ماتَhave died إخوَتيmy brothers
ولستُand I am not عنfrom الصهباءِtawny wine يوماًfor a day بصابرِable to abstain
Indeed, I am a man of patience, though my brothers have died,
And I am indeed steadfast, though my brothers have died,
yet I cannot bear to be away from the ruddy wine for a single day.
Yet I cannot abstain from tawny wine even for a day.

The Commander of the Faithful has dealt her the deathblow;
The Commander of the Faithful dealt her a deathblow,
and now her devoted companions weep around the winepresses.
So her friends weep around the winepresses.
