متىwhen ياO عُرَيبَdear Arab folk الحيthe encampment عينيmy eye تراكمُsees you
وأسمعُand I hear منfrom تلكَthose الديارdwellings نداكمُyour call
When, O dear Arab folk of the encampment, will my eyes behold you?
When, O dear Arab folk of the encampment, will my eye see you?
And hear your call from those dwellings?
And when will I hear your call from those dwellings?
ويجمعناand reunites us الدهرtime الذيwhich حالintervened بينناbetween us
ويحظىand finds joy بكمin you قلبيmy heart وعينيand my eye تراكمُsees you
When will Time, which came between us, bring us together,
And when will time, which came between us, reunite us?
So that my heart rejoices in you and my eyes behold you?
And when will my heart find joy in you, and my eye see you?
أمرُّI pass علىby الأبوابthe doors منin غيرthe absence of حاجةneed
لعليperhaps I may أراكُمI see you أوor أرىI see منsomeone who يراكُمsees you
I pass by the doors although I have no need—
I pass by the doors without any need,
Perhaps I may see you, or see someone who sees you.
Hoping to see you, or to see someone who sees you.
سقانيgave me drink الهوىpassion كأساًa cup منof الحبlove صافياًpure
فياso, oh ليتهُif only it لمّاwhen سقانيgave me drink سقاكُمgave you drink
Passion gave me a clear cup of love to drink;
Passion gave me a cup of pure love to drink;
If only, when it gave me drink, it had given you to drink as well.
Oh, if only it had given you drink when it gave me drink!
فياso, oh ليتَif only قاضيthe judge of الحبّlove يحكمُwould judge بينَناbetween us
وداعيand the caller of الهوىpassion لمّاwhen دعانيcalled me دعاكمُcalled you
If only the judge of love would pass judgment between us,
Oh, if only the judge of love would judge between us,
And passion’s herald, when he called me, had called you too.
And passion's caller had called you when he called me!
أناI عبدُكُمyour slave بلrather عبدa slave of عبدٍa slave لعبدكمbelonging to your slave
ومملوكُكمand your bondsman منthrough بيعكمyour selling وشراكمُand your buying
I am your slave—indeed, the slave of a slave belonging to your slave—
I am your slave—nay, the slave of a slave of your slave;
Your chattel, yours to sell and buy.
And your bondsman through your selling and buying.

وإنand even if قلَّتare scant الأموالُriches روحيmy soul فداكمُa ransom for you
I have deeded to you myself and all my hand possesses;
I have signed over to you myself and all my hand possesses;
Though my wealth is scant, my soul is your ransom.
And even if riches are scant, my soul is a ransom for you.
لسانيmy tongue بمجدكُمwith your glory وقلبيand my heart بحبكُمwith love for you
وماand not نظرتhas beheld عينيmy eye مليحاًanyone lovely سواكمُother than you
My tongue proclaims your glory, and my heart is filled with your love;
My tongue speaks of your glory, and my heart is filled with love for you;
My eyes have never beheld any beauty but you.
And my eye has seen no lovely one but you.
وماand not شرّفhas ennobled الأكوانthe worlds إلّاexcept جمالكُمyour beauty
وماand not يقصدُseek العُشّاقُlovers إلّاexcept سناكمُyour radiance
Nothing has ennobled all creation except your beauty,
And nothing has ennobled the worlds but your beauty;
And lovers seek nothing but your radiance.
And lovers seek nothing but your radiance.

أقولُI say رضيthe pleasure of الرحمنِthe Most Merciful ثمthen رضاكمُyour pleasure
If I am asked, “What do you desire from God?”
And if I am asked, 'What do you desire from God?'
I say, “The Merciful One’s pleasure, and then yours.”
I say, 'The Most Merciful's pleasure, then yours.'
وليand I have مقلةٌan eye بالدمعwith tears تجريflows صبيبةًin a pouring stream

I have an eye that streams with tears in a downpour;
And I have an eye that flows with a stream of tears;
Sleep is forbidden it until it beholds you.
Sleep is forbidden to it until it sees you.

Carry me, reduced to bones, as a burden wherever you journey,
Take me as bones, borne along wherever you travel;
And wherever you alight, bury me beside you.
And wherever you settle, bury me beside you.

Tread around my grave with the tips of your sandals,
And circle my grave with the tips of your sandals,
And my bones will come alive when they hear your call.
So my bones will come alive wherever I hear your call.
وقولواand say رعاكَmay He watch over you اللَهGod ياO ميتَone dead from الهوىpassion

And say, “May God watch over you, O one who died of love,
And say, 'May God watch over you, O one dead of passion,
And lodge you in Paradise near their sacred precinct.”
And lodge you in Paradise near your sanctuary.'
