ياO عالماًKnower بالخفياتof hidden things سألتكI beseech You ياO مولىMaster المواليthe masters
يا عالماً بالخفيات سألتك يا مولى الموالي
امحerase ذنوباًsins عليّاupon me منthe One who عليهon Him اتكاليmy reliance
امح ذنوباً عليّا من عليه اتكالي
O Knower of hidden things, I beseech You, O Master of masters.
Erase the sins that burden me, O You on whom I rely.
ياذاO Possessor of الجلالmajesty اعفُpardon عنيme
ياذا الجلال اعفُ عني
سألتكI beseech You بجاهِby the standing of المكرّمthe honored one
سألتك بجاهِ المكرّم
O Possessor of Majesty, pardon me.
I beseech You by the honored one's standing.
قلpardon عثاريmy stumbling وأجرنيand grant me refuge
قل عثاري وأجرني
منfrom حرّthe heat of نارthe fire of جهنّمHell
من حرّ نار جهنّم
Pardon my stumbling and grant me refuge
from the heat of Hell's fire.
ياO خالقيmy Creator اعفُpardon عنّيme
يا خالقي اعفُ عنّي
ياO منYou who هوَHe بالحالِof the condition يعلَمknows
يا من هوَ بالحالِ يعلَم
O my Creator, pardon me.
O You who know my condition.
إليكَto You أشكوI complain ماwhat بيails me أُجبرmend ياO مولايmy Lord حاليmy condition
إليكَ أشكو ما بي أُجبر يا مولاي حالي
امحُerase ذنوباًsins عليّاupon me منthe One who عليهِon Him اتكاليmy reliance
امحُ ذنوباً عليّا من عليهِ اتكالي
To You I complain of what ails me; mend my condition, O my Lord.
Erase the sins that burden me, O You on whom I rely.
ألشيبُgray hair اكانيclothed me (uncertain reading) حلهa robe (probable reading)
ألشيبُ اكاني حله
نشرspread جنودهُits troops فيin رأسيmy head
نشر جنودهُ في رأسي
Gray hair has clothed me in a robe [reading uncertain].
It has spread its troops over my head.
الممرُthe passage (perhaps life's span) قدalready صارhas become ولّيgone by
الممرُ قد صار ولّي
ياO عُذرىmy excuse يومthe day of التصاميfeigning deafness (wording uncertain)
يا عُذرى يوم التصامي
Life's span has now slipped away [reading uncertain].
O my excuse on the day of feigned deafness [wording uncertain].
أناI المسكينُthe poor wretch فيin غفلَةheedlessness
أنا المسكينُ في غفلَة
غارقdrowning فيin بحرِthe sea of المعاصيacts of disobedience
غارق في بحرِ المعاصي
I, the poor wretch, am heedless,
drowning in the sea of disobedience.
كيفhow ننجوcan we escape منfrom ذيthis القضيةplight اللَهGod يثبتmakes steadfast فؤاديmy heart
كيف ننجو من ذي القضية اللَه يثبت فؤادي
امحerase ذنوباًsins عليّاupon me منthe One who عليهon Him اتكاليmy reliance
امح ذنوباً عليّا من عليه اتكالي
How can we escape this plight? May God make my heart steadfast.
Erase the sins that burden me, O You on whom I rely.
ياO حاديcamel-driver الميسthe swaying gait اجهَدexert yourself
يا حادي الميس اجهَد
وسرand journey معwith الزائريناthe visitors
وسر مع الزائرينا
O driver of the swaying camels, press on.
And journey with the visitors.
واقرand convey السلامthe greeting مؤكدwith emphasis
واقر السلام مؤكد
إذاwhen بلغتَyou reach المدينهMedina
إذا بلغتَ المدينه
And convey the greeting with emphasis,
when you reach Medina,
علىto حبيبيmy beloved محمّدMuhammad
على حبيبي محمّد
هوhe غداtomorrow يشفَعintercedes فيناfor us
هو غدا يشفَع فينا
to my beloved Muhammad.
He will intercede for us tomorrow.
الهاديthe guide خيرthe best of البراياcreation لهto him صارhave become عقليmy mind وباليand my thoughts
الهادي خير البرايا له صار عقلي وبالي
امحُerase ذنوباًsins عليّاupon me منthe One who عليهِon Him اتكاليmy reliance
امحُ ذنوباً عليّا من عليهِ اتكالي
The guide, the best of creation—my mind and thoughts are now his.
Erase the sins that burden me, O You on whom I rely.
