إنif لاحappears منfrom أفُقِthe horizon of الوصالunion صباحُa dawn
O friend, no blame rests upon the lover,
O friend, lovers bear no blame
if a dawn gleams from the horizon of union.
If dawn breaks from the horizon of union
لاno ذنبَsin للعُشّاقِfor the lovers إنif عنبgrapes الهوىpassion

No sin lies upon lovers if the grapes of passion ... [wording unclear]
Lovers are not at fault if the passion of love
Ardent love exposed its concealment; they gave off fragrance.
Its secrecy exposed, infatuation erupted
سمحواthey gave freely بأنفُسِهمof their own lives ماnot بخلواthey were miserly بهاwith them
لمّاwhen درَواthey learned أنَّthat السماحَgenerosity رباحُgain
They freely gave their lives, not holding them back,
They forgave themselves, did not begrudge it
when they learned that generosity is gain.
When they knew that to forgive is gain
لمnot يطربواthey rejoiced إلّاexcept بذكرِin remembering حبيبهمtheir beloved

They rejoiced only in remembering their beloved,
They were glad only in remembering their beloved
and joys were theirs throughout their days.
And they had, in the length of their time, joys

So love’s herald summoned them with a call,
So the caller of love called them with a call
and they went forth, gladdened by it, morning and evening.
And they went out rejoicing and at peace

Rise, O [my boon companion?], go to the wine, and pour us
Rise, my cupbearer, to the wine, and serve us
wine through whose drinking souls grow radiant.
A drink that illuminates souls when drunk

Or do you not see the ancient cupbearer passing it round?
Or don’t you see the ancient cupbearer circling it
So it seems a lamp within its cup.
As if it were a lamp in his cup?

It once intoxicated Adam in Paradise,
It made Adam drunk with bliss once
so a robe and sash from it clothed him.
And clothed him in a robe and wrap

And likewise, it intoxicated Noah aboard the ship,
And so too Noah in the ark got drunk
and through that he had [unclear] and lamentation.
And he had with that a tenuous excuse

And by drinking it the Friend became a boon companion,
And by drinking it Abraham became a reveler
so its covenants stand valid before God.
So its pacts with God are true

When Moses drew near to hear it
he cast down his staff, and tablets were broken.
He threw down his staff and tablets were shattered

And likewise, the son of Mary is lost in love of it,
And likewise Son of Mary enraptured by it
enamored of its draught, a wanderer.
An expectant wanderer drinking it

And Muhammad, Pride of the Lofty, Honor of Guidance
the Opener chose him to drink it.
He whom the Opener chose for drinking it
