طال اشتياقي ولا خلّ يؤانسني

طال اشتياقي ولا خلّ يؤانسني

ولا الزمانُ بما نهوى يوافيني

ولا الزمانُ بما نهوى يوافيني

Long has my yearning endured, with no dear friend to keep me company;

My longing has lasted long, and no friend keeps me company.

Nor does time bring me what we long for.

Nor does time bring me what we desire.

قالوا جُنِنت بمن تهوى فقُلتُ لهُم

قالوا جُنِنت بمن تهوى فقُلتُ لهُم

ما لذَّةُ العيشِ إلّا للمجانينِ

ما لذَّةُ العيشِ إلّا للمجانينِ

They said, “You have gone mad for the one you love.” So I told them,

They said, “You have gone mad for the one you love,” so I said to them:

“The joy of life belongs only to the mad.”

Life’s delight is for none but the mad.
