تذلَّلتI humbled myself فيin البلدانِthe lands حينwhen سبيتَنيyou took me captive
وبتُّand I spent the night بأوجاعِwith the pangs of الغوىinfatuation أتَقَلَّبُtossing and turning
I humbled myself throughout the lands when you took me captive.
I became humbled in the lands when you captured me,
And I spent the night tossing in the pangs of infatuation.
And I suffer the pains of passion, tossing and turning.
فلوfor if كانthere were ليfor me قلبانtwo hearts عشتُI would live بواحدٍwith one
وأترُكُand I would leave قلباًa heart فيin هواكَlove for you يعذَّبُis tormented
For if I had two hearts, I would live with one,
If only I had two hearts, I would live with one,
and leave one heart to be tormented in its love for you.
And leave a heart for your love to torment.
ولكنَّand yet ليI have قلباa heart تملَّكهُhas possessed it الهوىlove
فلاso neither العيشُlife يهتناis pleasant ليfor me ولاnor الموتdeath أقربُnearer
Yet I have only one heart, which love has possessed,
But I have only one heart that passion has taken over,
so life holds no joy for me, nor is death any nearer.
So neither life pleases me, nor is death closer.
كعصفورةٍlike a sparrow فيin كفِّthe palm of طفلٍa child يضمهاhe clasps her
تذوقُshe tastes سياقthe throes of الموتdeath والطفلwhile the child يلعبُplays
Like a sparrow in the palm of a child who clasps her,
Like a bird in a child's fist that he squeezes,
she tastes the throes of death while the child plays.
It tastes the flow of death while the child plays.
فلاfor neither الطفلُthe child ذوpossessed of عقلٍunderstanding يحنُّfeels compassion لماfor what بهاafflicts her
ولاnor الطيرُthe bird ذوpossessed of ريشٍfeathers يطيرُflies فيَذهبُand so goes away
For the child has no sense to pity her plight,
For the child has no mind that cares for her state,
nor has the bird feathers to fly and get away.
Nor has the bird wings to fly away and leave.
تسمّيتُI took the name بالمجنونof Majnun (the madman) ألمthe pain of الهوىlove
وصارتand came to be بيabout me الأمثالproverbs فيamong الحيthe clan تُضرَبُcoined
I took the name Majnun through the pain of love,
I was called insane for the agony of passion,
and among the clan I became the subject of proverbs.
And proverbs about me were struck in the district.
فياso, O معشرَcompany of العُشّاقِlovers موتواdie, all of you صبابةًof ardent longing
كماjust as ماتَdied بالهجرانِfrom separation قيسQays معذَّبtormented
So, O company of lovers, die of yearning,
So O lovers' throng, die young,
just as Qays died, tormented by separation.
Like Qays died, tortured by estrangement.
