تملَّكتمواyou have possessed عقليmy mind وطرفيand my gaze ومسمَعيand my hearing
وروحيand my soul وأحشائيand my innermost parts وكليand all of me بأجمعيin my entirety
You have possessed my mind, my gaze, and my hearing,
And my soul, my innermost parts—my whole self, entirely.
وتيّهتُمونيand you bewildered me فيin بديعthe marvel of جمالِكُمyour beauty
ولمand did not أدرI know فيin مجرthe course of (apparently intended) الهوىlove أينَwhere موضعيmy place
And you have left me bewildered in your wondrous beauty,
And I knew not where I stood in the course of love.
وأوصَيتُمونيand you charged me لاnot أبوحI divulge بسرِّكُمyour secret
فباحَso revealed بماwhat أخفيI conceal تفيضُoverflow أدمعيmy tears
And you charged me not to disclose your secret,
Yet my overflowing tears revealed what I concealed.
ولمّاand when فنىwas spent صبريmy patience وقلَّand diminished تجلُّديmy fortitude
وفارَقتنيand forsook me نوميmy sleep وحُرِّمَتand was forbidden مضجعيmy bed
And when my patience was spent and my fortitude waned,
And my sleep forsook me, and my bed was denied me,
أتَيتI came لقاضيto the judge of الحبِّlove قُلتُI said أحبِّتيmy beloveds
جفونيthey shunned me وقالواand they said أنتyou فيin الحبِّlove مدّعيa pretender
I came to the judge of love and said: My beloveds
Have shunned me and said, “You are a pretender in love.”
وعنديand I have شهودٌwitnesses للصَبابةِto ardent longing والأساand sorrow
يزكّونَthey substantiate ذعوايَmy claim (apparent misspelling) إذاwhen جئتُI came أدعيI make my claim
And I have witnesses to my ardent longing and sorrow,
Who substantiate my claim whenever I come to plead:
سهاديmy sleeplessness ووجديand my passion واكتئابيand my dejection ولوعتيand my burning anguish
وشوقيand my yearning وسقميand my sickness واصفراريand my pallor وأدمعيand my tears
My sleeplessness, my passion, my dejection, and my burning anguish,
And my yearning, my sickness, my pallor, and my tears.
ومنand of عجبٍwonder أنيthat I أحنُّI yearn إليهِمfor them
واسألُand I ask شوقاًout of longing عنهمabout them وهمُwhile they معيwith me
And it is a wonder that I yearn for them,
And ask after them in longing, though they are with me.
وتبكيهُمand weeps for them عينيmy eye وهمwhile they فيin سوادِهاits dark pupil
ويشكوand laments النوىseparation نبيa prophet (as written) وهمwhile they بينbetween أضلُعيmy ribs
And my eye weeps for them, though they are within its dark pupil,
And a prophet [as written] laments separation, though they are between my ribs.
فإنso if طلبونيthey call me to account فيfor حقوقِthe dues of هواهُمtheir love
فإنيthen I am فقيرٌpoor لاnothing عليَّowed by me ولاand nothing معيin my possession
So if they call me to account for the dues of their love,
Then I am a pauper, owing nothing and owning nothing.
وإنand if سجنونيthey imprison me فيin سجونِthe prisons of جفاهُمtheir estrangement
دخَلتُI shall enter عليهمinto their presence بالشفيعِwith the intercessor المُشَفَّعِwhose intercession is accepted
And if they imprison me in the prisons of their estrangement,
I shall enter their presence with the intercessor whose plea is accepted.
