The clouds wept, and through their weeping made

the gardens' flowers laugh, and the rivers overflowed.

The sun of day has come with a host

of green things; within its secrets lie secrets.

And spring came with its cavalry and its troops,

so eyes delighted in its beauty.

And the rose called: 'Come to the ripe fruit!'

So birds and trees raced one another.

    والجو يضحك والحبيبُ يُزارُ

    And the cup dances, and the wine sparkles;

and the sky laughs, and the beloved is visited.

And the lute responds to the graceful beauties,

and the reed pipe drowned out the frame drum's sound.

Do not suppose we mean forbidden piping:

our pipe is praise of God and invocations.

And our drink is from His grace, and our song is:

'Excellent is the Beloved, the One, the All-Subduing!'

And the lute is the Beautiful One's ways, and our cup

is the cup of discernment; the abodes are dignity [sense uncertain].

So unite in affection, perfume yourselves, and seize the chance,

before death, for your time is treacherous [reading uncertain].

And God is more merciful to the poor one, when he comes,

than his parents are, for He is ever-forgiving.

Then blessings upon the intercessor, the Chosen One,

as long as the birds sing in their tongues.
