أهلُthe people المحبَّةِof love بالمحبوبِin the Beloved قدindeed شغلواthey have been absorbed
أهلُ المحبَّةِ بالمحبوبِ قد شغلوا
وفيand in محبَّتَهِlove of Him أرواحهُمtheir souls بذَلواthey freely gave
وفي محبَّتَهِ أرواحهُم بذَلوا
The people of love are absorbed in the Beloved.
And for love of Him they have freely given their souls.
وخرّبواand they laid waste كلَّall ماthat which يغنىperishes (apparently يفنى is intended) وقدand indeed عمرواthey built up
وخرّبوا كلَّ ما يغنى وقد عمروا
ماwhat كانwas يبقىto endure فياso, oh حسنthe beauty of الذيwhat عملواthey did
ما كان يبقى فيا حسن الذي عملوا
They laid waste to all that perishes, and built up
What endures—how beautiful was what they did!
لمdid not تُلههمdistract them زينةُthe adornment الدنياof the world وزُخرُفُهاand its glitter
لم تُلههم زينةُ الدنيا وزُخرُفُها
ولاnor جناهاits fruits ولاnor حليٌّjewelry ولاnor حلَلُfine robes
ولا جناها ولا حليٌّ ولا حلَلُ
The world's adornment and glitter did not distract them,
Nor its fruits, nor jewelry, nor fine robes.
هامواthey wandered enraptured علىthroughout الكونcreation منfrom وجدٍecstasy ومنand from طربٍrapture
هاموا على الكون من وجدٍ ومن طربٍ
وماand not استقَلَّcould contain بهمthem ربعٌa dwelling ولاnor طلَلُa ruined campsite
وما استقَلَّ بهم ربعٌ ولا طلَلُ
They wandered through creation in ecstasy and rapture,
And no dwelling or ruined campsite could hold them.
داعيthe herald التشوفِof yearning ناداهمsummoned them وأقلقهُمand unsettled them
داعي التشوفِ ناداهم وأقلقهُم
فكيفَso how يهنوcan they find ease ونارُwhile the fire الشوقِof longing تشتعلُblazes
فكيفَ يهنو ونارُ الشوقِ تشتعلُ
The herald of yearning summoned them and unsettled them.
How, then, could they rest while longing's fire blazes?
منfrom أوَّلthe beginning of الليلthe night قدalready سارَتset forth عزائمهُمtheir resolves
من أوَّل الليل قد سارَت عزائمهُم
وفيand in خيامthe tents of حمىthe sanctuary of المحبوبthe Beloved قدindeed نزلواthey alighted
وفي خيام حمى المحبوب قد نزلوا
From the beginning of night their resolves had set forth,
And they alighted in the tents of the Beloved's sanctuary.
وافتarrived لهمfor them خلعُrobes التشريفof honor يحملُهاbearing them
وافت لهم خلعُ التشريف يحملُها
عرفthe fragrance of النسيمthe breeze الذيwhich منfrom نشرهits perfume ثملواthey grew drunk
عرف النسيم الذي من نشره ثملوا
Robes of honor came to them, borne
By the breeze's fragrance, whose perfume made them drunk.
همُthey الأحبَّةُthe beloved ones أدناهمHe drew them near لأنهمُbecause they
همُ الأحبَّةُ أدناهم لأنهمُ
عنregarding خدمَةِservice to الصمدthe Eternal Refuge المحبوبthe Beloved ماnot غفلواthey were heedless
عن خدمَةِ الصمد المحبوب ما غفلوا
They are the beloved ones; He drew them near because they
Never neglected serving the Eternal Refuge, the Beloved.
سبحانglory be to منthe One who خصهُمsingled them out بالقُربِfor nearness حينwhen قضواthey perished
سبحان من خصهُم بالقُربِ حين قضوا
فيin حبهlove of Him وعلىand upon مقصودهِمtheir goal حصلواthey attained
في حبه وعلى مقصودهِم حصلوا
Glory to Him who singled them out for nearness when they perished
In love of Him, and attained their goal.
