أنَّ خصالي رشفَ المصالي

Know, my dear friend,

that my habit is sipping al-maṣālī [an unclear term].

قد جار حبي وأسلوب نصالي

قد جار حبي وأسلوب نصالي

واقطع وصالي

واقطع وصالي

My love has grown cruel, as has the manner of my blades;

and sever my bond.

لا زال عشقي على اتصال

لا زال عشقي على اتصال

بلا انفصال

بلا انفصال

My passion remains in union,

without separation.

الصبر عنده جعلت نائب على المصائب

الصبر عنده جعلت نائب على المصائب

فما سقوني حتى رجعت للّه تائب

فما سقوني حتى رجعت للّه تائب

With him, I made patience a deputy against calamities.

So they gave me no drink until I returned to God repentant.

لقد حلالي خمير كاسي

لقد حلالي خمير كاسي

والغصنُ آسي

والغصنُ آسي

Indeed, the ferment of my cup grew sweet to me,

and the bough is my healer.

وفي حفيره بِشربٍ كاس

وفي حفيره بِشربٍ كاس

طابت أنفاسي

طابت أنفاسي

And in its hollow, through drinking a cup,

my breaths grew sweet.

وذكّرتني فصِرتُ ناسٍ

وذكّرتني فصِرتُ ناسٍ

أهلي وناسي

أهلي وناسي

And you reminded me, so I became forgetful of

my family and my people.

بت أوطاني واشتريت دار الحبائب

بت أوطاني واشتريت دار الحبائب

فما سقوني حتى رجعت للّه تائب

فما سقوني حتى رجعت للّه تائب

I spent the night in my homelands and bought the home of the beloveds.

So they gave me no drink until I returned to God repentant.

قد زوّجوني بنت الدوالي

قد زوّجوني بنت الدوالي

وهيَ الدوالي

وهيَ الدوالي

They have married me to the daughter of the vines,

and she is the vines.

وقد تركتُ أمّ الهوالي

وقد تركتُ أمّ الهوالي

بلا هوى لي

بلا هوى لي

And I have left the mother of terrors [an uncertain reading],

with no desire of my own.

وإن قل الناس

وإن قل الناس

بهالي فلا أُبالي

بهالي فلا أُبالي

And if people speak

of my state, I do not care.

فإن أطَعتُ وإن عصيتُ فاللَهُ رقب

فإن أطَعتُ وإن عصيتُ فاللَهُ رقب

فما سقوني حتى رجعت للّه تائب

فما سقوني حتى رجعت للّه تائب

Whether I obey or disobey, God keeps watch.

So they gave me no drink until I returned to God repentant.

لقد وقفت على حدود

لقد وقفت على حدود

تلكَ الحدودِ

تلكَ الحدودِ

Indeed, I have stood at boundaries—

those boundaries.

وقد لزِمتُ سهر القعود

وقد لزِمتُ سهر القعود

ونفرَ عودي

ونفرَ عودي

And I have kept vigil while seated,

and my frame recoiled.

فما انعِدام ولا الوجود

فما انعِدام ولا الوجود

بين الوجود

بين الوجود

So there is neither nonexistence nor existence

amid existence.

وأين أثني وأين كنتُ حاضر وغائب

وأين أثني وأين كنتُ حاضر وغائب

فما سقوني حتى رجعت للّه تائب

فما سقوني حتى رجعت للّه تائب

And where do I offer praise, and where was I—present and absent?

So they gave me no drink until I returned to God repentant.
