إذا اعتكرت ظلماء ليلٍ ونوّمت
عيونُeyes رجالٍmen واستلذواand they relished المضاجِعاthe beds
عيونُ رجالٍ واستلذوا المضاجِعا
When a night's darkness thickened and sleep overtook
men's eyes, and they relished their beds,
سماadvanced نحوَtoward جارneighbor البيتِthe house يَستامseeks to obtain عرسَهhis wife
سما نحوَ جار البيتِ يَستام عرسَه
يزيدYazid دبيباًcreeping للمعاناةِfor the endeavor قابعاcrouching
يزيد دبيباً للمعاناةِ قابعا
he advanced toward the next-door neighbor, soliciting his wife—
Yazid, creeping and crouching for the endeavor.
وإنand if إمكنتهshe granted him access جارةُfemale neighbor البيتِthe house أوor رنتgazed
وإن إمكنته جارةُ البيتِ أو رنت
إليهtoward him أتاهاhe came to her بعدafter ذلكthat طائعاwillingly
إليه أتاها بعد ذلك طائعا
And if the woman next door granted him access, or gazed
toward him, he came to her after that, willingly.
