Say to Athir al-Din, companion of the heights,

brother of generosity, scion of the lions of al-Shara:

You are excellence’s shooting star—rather, its sun,

and the massif of glory and the mountain of wisdom.

O foremost of men in reaching a goal,

and O noble in branch and lineage,

O giver of strung pearls, than which

my ear has never heard anything finer:

verse like a garden whose growth is lush,

its daisies spending the night exuding dew.

For, despite the strength of its words, it is

more delicate than the passing breath of the east wind.

Through it I grew in joy and gladness,

as though I had returned to the days of youth.

One like you should not give himself as ransom; can

earth’s pebbles be ransomed with heaven’s stars?

    You deserve that people, against

every calamity, should be ransom for your eminence.

You first favored me; and the credit among

people belongs to whoever gives first and takes the lead.

So listen—may calamities pass you by, and may no

turns of death ever enter your gathering place—

the troubles of time and its misfortunes

have left me cast aside in a corner of my house.

They shattered my hopes and shortened

my stride, though I was never short of step.

My morning and evening are alike; for the darkness

of night, to me, is like the bright forenoon.

So make allowance for one who is late,

whose days have marched him backward.

For you are my treasure whenever I am beset by

time—what a fine treasure and refuge you are!
