وياand O غمَّanguish الفؤادِof the heart لماat what لقيناwe endured
Oh, my anguish and my grief together!
Oh my yearning, oh my sadness altogether
And oh, the heart’s anguish at what we endured!
And oh the grief of my heart for what we have met
تركناwe abandoned الدينfaith والدنياand worldly life جميعاًboth
وخلّيناand we left behind الحلائلthe wives والبنيناand the sons
We abandoned faith and worldly life alike,
We left religion and the world altogether
And left behind our wives and sons.
And we left the loved ones and our sons
فماfor … not كنّاwe were أناساًpeople أهلpeople of دينٍfaith
فنصبرso we might endure patiently للبلاءin the face of affliction إذاwhen بُليناwe were tested
For we were not people of faith,
For we were not people of religion
To endure affliction patiently when put to the test;
To have patience for affliction when we are tested
ولاnor كُنّاwe were أناساًpeople أهلpeople of دنياworldly life
فنمنعهاso we might defend it وإنand even if لمnot نرجُwe hoped for دنياworldly gain
Nor were we people of worldly life,
Nor were we people of the world
To defend it, even if we hoped for no worldly gain.
To refuse it even if we do not want the world
تركناwe left دُورناour homes لطغامto the rabble عكٍّof ʿAkk

We left our homes to the rabble of ʿAkk,
We left our homes to tyrannical rabble
And the Nabataeans of the villages and the Ashʿarīs.
And the peasants of villages and Ash'aris
