    Suʿād has departed, and yesterday her bond was severed.

    Would that some bond of union with her might return.

    فطارت النفسُ من وجدٍ بها قطعا

    A far-flung, wayward exile has borne her away;

    And my soul flew to pieces from longing for her.

    My eye has known no rest since she left, to find relief in

    The taste of slumber whenever a sleeper sleeps.

    وقد أكونُ صحيحَ الصدرِ فانصدعا

    I have denied my soul the solace on which it lives;

    My breast was once whole, but it has split apart.

    وقبل لومك ما أغنيت مَن مَنَعا

    My reprover began blaming me for what was gone;

    And before your reproach, what help had you given one who withheld?

    وقد أرى في بلاد اللَه متَّسعا

    Easy now; leave me be, for my nature has overmastered me;

    And I see ample room in God's lands.

    My glory is ancestral; whatever I spend is replenished

    By God's bounty; the best wealth is that which benefits.

    ولا استكنتُ له إن خانَ أو خدَعا

    Time has never bitten me without making me more generous;

    Nor have I bowed to it, whether it betrayed or deceived.

    Nor does my tested mettle soften despite afflictions,

    Amid calamities, when time touches me with disgrace.

    Nor do its pressures soften the wood I am made of,

    When even the long-lived grow pliant beneath them or bow.

    ولا أموت على ما فاتني جزَعا

    Whatever good God makes available, I am content with it;

    Nor do I die in anguish over what has passed me by.

    ولا أقولُ لشيء فاتَ ما صنَعا

    Nor do I deceive a householder when he is off his guard;

    Nor do I say of something lost, 'What became of it?'

    لم يجعلِ اللَهِ في أقوالهم قَذعا

    I do indeed praise men of noble lineage;

    God has put no foul abuse in their words.

    Men of pure, tested mettle despite afflictions—

    Were musk squeezed from their fingertips, it would well forth.

    By this I mean the sons of Shihāb; indeed, they are

    The noblest of people in character and beneficence.
