By my life, the people of Syria thrust more fiercely with the spear,
By my life, the people of Syria thrust harder with lances,
and guard more zealously what they fear disgrace may touch.
and are more protective of what might suffer disgrace.

They are the ones who drive the horses forward, their throats streaming blood,
They drive the horses forward, their throats bleeding,
when the locks of hair turn white from the terror of battle.
when locks turn white from the terror of battle.
فَرَرناwe fled عجالاًin haste عنaway from بنيناour sons وأهلِناand our families
وأزواجناand our wives إذwhen عارضتناconfronted us الصفائحthe sword-blades
We fled in haste, away from our sons and our kin,
We fled in haste, abandoning our sons and our families,
and from our wives, when the sword-blades confronted us.
and our wives, when sword-blades confronted us.

We lost our nerve—though from the watering-place of death there is no escape.
We were cowards, though there is no escape from death's watering place.
Fie upon those miserly, self-clinging souls!
Ah, how vile those miserly souls!
تركناهُمwe left them صحنَthe open plain of العراقِIraq وناقلتand galloped away

We left them in the open plain of Iraq, while bearing us away
We left them on Iraq's open plain, and off galloped
were tall, long-limbed mares of al-A‘waj’s breed.
with us the tall, long-limbed steeds of Aʿwaj's stock.
فقلso tell للحوارياتto the fair-skinned women يبكينَto weep for غيرناothers, not us
ولاand let not تبكناweep for us إلّاexcept الكلابَthe dogs النوابحthe barking ones
So tell the fair women to weep for men other than us;
So tell the fair-skinned women to weep for others, not us;
let none mourn us but barking dogs.
and let none weep for us but the barking dogs.
بكينَthey wept إليناto us خشيةًfor fear أنthat تُبيحَهاmake them prey
رماحُthe spears of النصارىthe Christians والسيوفand the swords الجوارحthe wounding ones
They appealed to us in tears, fearing they would be given over as spoil
They wept to us, fearing they would be made prey
to the Christians’ spears and the swords that rend flesh.
by the Christians' spears and the wounding swords.
بكينthey wept لكيماso that يمنعوهُنَّthey might protect them منهمfrom them
وتأبىand refuse قلوبٌhearts أضمرتهاconcealed them الجوانِحthe ribs
They wept in hopes that men would shield them from those foes,
They wept so that the men might protect them from the foe,
but the hearts enclosed within our ribs refused.
but the hearts hidden within the ribs refuse.
وناديتناand you called to us أينwhere الفرارُescape وكُنتُمand you used to
تغارونfeel jealous concern أنthat تبدوbecome visible البرىthe anklets والوشائحand the jeweled sashes
They called after us: “Where can you flee? You once
And you called to us: “Where can you flee, when you used to
were jealous even lest our anklets and embroidered sashes be exposed.
guard jealously against anklets and jeweled sashes being seen?
أأسلمتموناhave you surrendered us? للعدّوto the enemy علىupon القناthe lances
إذاwhen انتُزعتwere torn away منهاfrom them القرونُthe horns النواطحthe butting ones
Have you surrendered us to the enemy at spearpoint,
Have you surrendered us to the enemy upon the lances,
now that the spears have been stripped of their butting horns?”
when the butting horns have been torn from them?
فماso no غارshowed jealous concern منكمamong you غائرٌjealous defender لحليلةٍfor a wife
ولاnor غربٌa fiery-spirited man عزّتwere dear عليهto him المناكحmarriage bonds
Yet not one of you showed a protector’s zeal for his wife,
So none among you showed jealous care for a wife,
nor any man of mettle, though the bonds of marriage were dear to him.
nor any fiery-spirited man to whom marriage bonds were dear.”
