By your life, when I entrust my need

To you, Abu Sasan, I am ill-guided.

Neither knowing the unseen—whence its harm may come—

Nor fearing the spreading of tales tomorrow.

So would that death's turns had carried me off,

And I had never sought kindness from the stingy giver.

For had you been freeborn, O Hudayn son of Mundhir,

You would have met my needs and not remained inert.

You scowled at me, fearing hospitality, and cast me aside,

And you were short of reach, not invested with authority.

Nor did you go beyond what you were suited to,

In baseness, O son of the abased, enslaved man.

So do not deliberately pass over Sulayman, possessor of high honor:

You will find a noble man, open-hearted in generosity,

Generous despite his faults, bestowing bounty,

And drinking tawny wine, sweet in fragrance,

Well-aged, like musk: its scent banishes

A head cold, and it urges a man to give lavishly of his wealth.

And leaves whoever sips its cup swaying,

Reeling as the sinner reeled from drunkenness.

It gleams like a rooster's eye; its bubbles leap,

When mixed with water, like the blaze of embers.

Such is the wine when you drink with a man of Marthad's house,

A companion over it who keeps babbling of nobility.

He sends you into oblivion at times, and at others offers it again

To you—may God grant you life—without his knowing.

He is accustomed never to behave rashly in its company,

And to bestow kindness in hardship and ease.

And indeed Sulayman son of Amr son of Marthad

Has sworn an oath to feather others, never pare them down.

So his ambition is to bestow bounty and build high renown,

And to strike champions' necks in devastating war.

And in peace he never ceases sipping aged wine,

Whenever night grows dark, until dawn's clear light.
