Al-Qa‘qa‘ threatens me beyond his proper bounds.

So I told him: Bakr is my shield if you assail me.

By my life, though you threatened me, you have not frightened me.

Go on, then—if you must rage, rage against the sun.

We and you, when war stands between us, seem

Like lions anointed with saffron and yellow wars-dye.

Our faces appear like lamps in the dark nights,

Whenever we meet, and like smooth Heraclean blades.

There lucky omens have sped rightward in our favor,

While for you the leftward birds fly with ill fortune.

And you, Qa‘qa‘, are only like one with me,

As though you had already been borne one day to the grave.

I think the post-mules are traveling by night toward you,

Bearing him, a man of Ghatafan—or else one of ‘Abs.

Or else with the dauntless one—woe to you if they travel by night,

Bearing him, his spear-shaft unyielding, no weakling.

For our officials are more faithful and of greater lasting worth,

While your officials are people of treachery and deceit.

And Banu ‘Amr shall find no leniency with me,

Nor al-Ribab anything but ruin upon ruin.
