صحاcame to its senses قلبيmy heart واقصرand desisted بعدafter غيٍّwaywardness
صحا قلبي واقصر بعد غيٍّ
طويلprolonged كانit had been فيهin it منbecause of الغوانيbeautiful women
طويل كان فيه من الغواني
My heart came to its senses and desisted after waywardness,
My heart is now serene, after long ignorance
Long endured on account of beautiful women,
In which I indulged in youthful passions.
بأنby the fact that قصدَit followed السبيلthe path فباعand so traded جهلاًfolly
بأن قصدَ السبيل فباع جهلاً
برُشدٍfor right guidance وارتجىand hoped for عُقبىthe final outcome of الزمانِtime
برُشدٍ وارتجى عُقبى الزمانِ
By following the path and trading folly
For I set out on the right path, selling ignorance
For right guidance, hoping for a good end to life.
For guidance, hoping for the best from time.
وخافand feared الموتdeath واعتصمand guarded himself ابنson of حجرٍHujr
وخاف الموت واعتصم ابن حجرٍ
منfrom الحبِّlove المُبرّحtormenting بالجنانِto the heart
من الحبِّ المُبرّح بالجنانِ
And Ibn Hujr feared death and guarded himself
The son of Hajar now fears death and holds fast
Against love that torments the heart.
To the Quran, not to the fleeting gardens.
وقِدماًand formerly كانَhe had been معترماًunruly جموحاًheadstrong
وقِدماً كانَ معترماً جموحاً
إلىtoward لذّاتهhis pleasures سلِسَpliant العنانِthe rein
إلى لذّاته سلِسَ العنانِ
And formerly he had been unruly and headstrong,
His feet once stubbornly went
Toward his pleasures, readily yielding to the rein.
Towards worldly pleasures, loose-reined.
واقلعand desisted بعدafter حبوتهِhis knees-clasped sitting (unclear here) وأضحىand became
واقلع بعد حبوتهِ وأضحى
طويلَfor a long stretch of الليلthe night يهرِفhe recites at length بالقُرانِwith the Qur’an
طويلَ الليل يهرِف بالقُرانِ
And he desisted after his knees-clasped repose—an uncertain expression here—and came to spend
But after enjoying them, he renounced
Long nights reciting the Qur’an at length,
And spends the long night reciting Quran,
ويدعوand calls upon اللَهGod مُجتهداًstriving earnestly لكيماso that
ويدعو اللَه مُجتهداً لكيما
ينالَhe might attain الفوزَsalvation منfrom غُرفthe chambers of الجنانParadise
ينالَ الفوزَ من غُرف الجنان
And praying earnestly to God, so that
Calling on God relentlessly that he might
He might attain salvation among the chambers of Paradise.
Attain salvation in the rooms of Paradise.
