وليتَand would that وصلاًa tie لهاto her منfrom حَبلهاher cord رجعاreturned
Su'ad departed, and yesterday her cord was severed.
And would that a tie to her, a strand of her cord, might return.
شَطّتwent far بهاwith her غُربةٌan exile زوراءُveering aside نازحةٌfar-off
فطارتso flew النفسُthe soul منfrom وجدٍyearning بهاfor her قطعاin pieces
A far-flung exile, veering aside, bore her far away,
So my soul flew to pieces from yearning for her.

طعمthe taste الرُقادِof slumber إذاwhen ماemphatic particle هاجعٌa sleeper هجعاslept
Since she left, my eye has found no rest, nor comfort in
The taste of slumber whenever a sleeper sleeps.
مَنعتI denied نفسيmy soul منfrom روحٍsolace تعيشit lives بهby it
وقدand once أكونُI was صحيحَsound الصدرِof breast فانصدعاthen it split
I denied my soul the solace by which it lives;
And my breast was once sound, but it split asunder.
غدَتbegan تلومshe blames علىfor ماwhat فاتwas lost عاذلتيmy female reproacher
وقبلand before لومكyour reproach ماnot أغنيتyou enriched مَنone who مَنَعاwithheld
My reproacher began blaming me for what was lost;
And before your reproach, you had not enriched one who withheld.
مهلاًgently ذرينيleave me فإنيfor indeed I غالنيoverpowered me خُلُقيmy nature
وقدand indeed أرىI see فيin بلادthe lands of اللَهGod متَّسعاample room
Gently now—leave me be, for my nature has overpowered me;
And in God's lands I see ample room.

سيبthe bounty of الإلهGod وخيرُand the best المالِwealth ماwhat نفعاbenefited
My glory is ancestral, and what I have spent is replenished by
God's bounty, and the best wealth is what benefits.
ماnever عضّنيbit me الدهرُTime إلاexcept زادنيincreased me كرماًin generosity
ولاnor استكنتُI submitted لهto it إنif خانَit betrayed أوor خدَعاdeceived
Time has never bitten me without increasing my generosity;
Nor have I submitted to it, even if it betrayed or deceived.
ولاnor تلينُsoftens علىdespite العلّاتafflictions معجَمتيmy tested mettle
فيin النائباتِcalamities إذاwhen ماwhat مسّنيtouched me طبَعاleft its mark
Nor does my tested mettle soften under afflictions,
Amid calamities, even when what touches me leaves its mark.
ولاnor تُلينُsoften منany of عوديmy wood غمائزُهits probings
إذاwhen المُعمرthe long-lived منهاbecause of them لانgrew soft أوor خضَعاyielded
Nor do its probings soften my timber,
When even the long-lived soften under them or yield.

ولاnor أموتI die علىover ماwhat فاتنيpassed me by جزَعاin anguish
Whatever good God has made available, I am content with it;
Nor do I die of anguish over what has passed me by.

ولاnor أقولُI say لشيءof something فاتَwas lost ماwhat صنَعاit did
Nor do I trick the master of the house when he is off guard;
Nor do I say of something gone, 'What became of it?'
إنّيindeed I لأمدحُI certainly praise أقواماًpeople ذويpossessing حَسَبٍancestral honor
لمdid not يجعلِput اللَهِGod فيin أقوالهمtheir words قَذعاfoul abuse
I indeed praise people of ancestral honor;
God has placed no foul abuse in their words.

Pure in their tested mettle, despite afflictions,
Were musk squeezed from their extremities, it would well forth.

لأكرمُsurely the noblest الناسِof people أخلاقاًin character ومُصطنَعاand in beneficence
By this I mean the sons of Shihab, and they are indeed
The noblest of people in character and deeds of kindness.
