Promise me nearness, and graciously grant me union.

Bring me close with nearness and gift me with union

And, despite the distance, grant me a phantom vision.

While my being from afar is but an illusion

فَإِني عَلى ما تَعهدين مِن الوَفا

فَإِني عَلى ما تَعهدين مِن الوَفا

وَلَستُ وَإِن طالَ الصُدود بِسالي

وَلَستُ وَإِن طالَ الصُدود بِسالي

For I hold to the faithfulness you have known in me,

For I am true to the vows you made to me

And I am not one to forget, however long the estrangement lasts.

I'll not change, though the estrangement be long

وَكَيفَ إِلى السُلوان أَصبو وَدُونه

وَكَيفَ إِلى السُلوان أَصبو وَدُونه

دَمي وَهوَ في غَير الصَبابة غالي

دَمي وَهوَ في غَير الصَبابة غالي

And how could I yearn for solace, when between me and it lies

How can I yearn for comfort while you are not there

My blood, which is precious except in passionate love?

My blood, while not in your veins, is so dear

وَلي قَلبُ عانٍ في الغَرام تطوّعا

وَلي قَلبُ عانٍ في الغَرام تطوّعا

لِجَمر الغَضى بَينَ الأَحبة صالي

لِجَمر الغَضى بَينَ الأَحبة صالي

And I have a heart, willingly captive to love,

I've a willing heart enamored with love

Scorched by ghada-wood embers among loved ones.

Stoking embers of passion midst lovers so dear

خديوي مَصر قادمٌ لِمَعالي

خديوي مَصر قادمٌ لِمَعالي

The Khedive of Egypt is coming for lofty honors.

My lord of Egypt comes for glorious deeds
