يا يومَ بُؤسٍ طلَعت شمسُه
بالنحسwith ill fortune لاmay ... not فارقتَyou leave رأسَhead الحُضينِal-Ḥuḍayn
بالنحس لا فارقتَ رأسَ الحُضينِ
O day of misery, whose sun has risen
O day of misery, the sun has risen in misfortune
With ill fortune—may you never leave al-Ḥuḍayn's head!
Ill luck did not part from the head of the intelligent
إنindeed حُضيناḤuḍayn لمdid not يزلcease to be باخلاًmiserly
إن حُضينا لم يزل باخلاً

مُذ كان بالمعروفِ كزَّ اليدين
Indeed, Ḥuḍayn has always been miserly,
Our intelligent one has not ceased being empty
Ever since he came to be, tight-fisted in doing good.
Since his hands were generous with good deeds
