صحاcame to its senses قلبيmy heart واقصرand desisted بعدafter غيٍّwaywardness
صحا قلبي واقصر بعد غيٍّ
طويلlong كانit was فيهin it منbecause of الغوانيthe lovely women
طويل كان فيه من الغواني
My heart came to its senses and desisted after a spell of error,
A long one, in which it had lingered because of lovely women.
بأنbecause قصدَit took السبيلthe path فباعso it traded جهلاًignorance
بأن قصدَ السبيل فباع جهلاً
برُشدٍfor sound judgment وارتجىand hoped for عُقبىthe final outcome الزمانِof time
برُشدٍ وارتجى عُقبى الزمانِ
For it took the path and so traded ignorance
For sound judgment, and hoped for a good end to its days.
وخافand feared الموتdeath واعتصمand sought protection ابنson of حجرٍHujr
وخاف الموت واعتصم ابن حجرٍ
منfrom الحبِّlove المُبرّحtormenting بالجنانِto the heart
من الحبِّ المُبرّح بالجنانِ
And Ibn Hujr feared death and sought protection
From love that torments the heart.
وقِدماًand formerly كانَhe was معترماًimpetuous جموحاًheadstrong
وقِدماً كانَ معترماً جموحاً
إلىtoward لذّاتهhis pleasures سلِسَyielding العنانِthe rein
إلى لذّاته سلِسَ العنانِ
And formerly he was impetuous and headstrong,
Toward his pleasures, yielding to the rein.
واقلعand desisted بعدafter حبوتهِhis sitting with knees drawn up وأضحىand became
واقلع بعد حبوتهِ وأضحى
طويلَlong الليلthe night يهرِفbabbles بالقُرانِwith the Qur’an
طويلَ الليل يهرِف بالقُرانِ
And he desisted after sitting with his knees drawn up, and became
One who babbles the Qur’an through the long night,
ويدعوand calls upon اللَهGod مُجتهداًstriving earnestly لكيماso that
ويدعو اللَه مُجتهداً لكيما
ينالَhe may attain الفوزَsuccess منfrom غُرفchambers الجنانthe gardens of Paradise
ينالَ الفوزَ من غُرف الجنان
And calls upon God, striving earnestly, so that
He may win the reward of chambers in Paradise.
