By my life, the men of al-Sham are better spearmen,

and better guard those whose disgrace is feared.

They drive the horses forward, their breasts bleeding,

when locks turn white from the terror of battle.

We fled in haste, abandoning our sons and our kin,

and our wives, when the sword-blades confronted us.

We were cowards, though there is no escape from death's watering-place.

Ah, shame upon those miserly souls!

We left them on Iraq's open plain, and off sped

the long-bodied, towering Aʿwaj-bred steeds, bearing us.

    ولا تبكنا إلّا الكلابَ النوابح

    So tell the fair-skinned women to weep for others, not us;

and let none but barking dogs weep for us.

They wept to us, afraid of being ravaged

by the Christians' spears and the wounding swords.

They wept so that men might shield them from the foe,

but the hearts enclosed within the ribs refused.

And you called to us: “Where is escape, though you once

were jealous lest anklets and jeweled sashes be seen?

Have you surrendered us to the foe upon the spears,

when the butting horns are torn away from them?

Not one of you showed jealous concern for a wife,

nor any fiery man who held his wives dear.”
