By your life, the day I entrust my need

To you, Abu Sasan, I am surely misguided.

For you neither know the unseen, whence its harm may come,

Nor fear the spreading of tales tomorrow.

Would that death's vicissitudes had borne me aloft,

Then I would not have sought kindness from a grudging giver.

Had you been freeborn, O Hudayn son of Mundhir,

You would have met my needs, not remained inert.

You scowled at me for fear of giving hospitality and cast me aside,

And you were short of reach, unadorned with honor.

Nor did you exceed what you were fit for

In baseness, son of the abased and enslaved man.

    تجد ماجداً بالجود منشرح الصدرِ

    So, when seeking help, do not pass Sulayman, lord of high rank;

You will find a noble man, open-hearted in generosity,

Generous despite his troubles, lavishing bounty,

And drinking it tawny and sweet of fragrance,

Aged, like musk; its vapor drives away

A head cold, and it calls a man to lavish giving.

And it leaves the drinker of its cup reeling,

Swaying as the sinner swayed with drunkenness.

It gleams like a cock's eye; its bubbles leap,

When mixed with water, like the blaze of embers.

Such is that wine: when you drink with one of Marthad's house,

Your companion over it keeps rambling about honor.

He makes you forget blood-feuds, then at times brings them back

Upon you—may God grant you life!—without realizing it.

He is accustomed never to act foolishly over it,

And to bestow kindness in hardship and ease.

And indeed, Sulayman son of Amr son of Marthad

Has sworn an oath to feather men with wealth, not whittle them down.

So his ambition is to lavish bounty and build high renown,

And strike champions' necks in devastating war.

And in safety he never ceases sipping aged wine,

Whenever night grows dark, until dawn's clear light.
