I say to my soul, in consolation and comfort:

In Mālik there was a successor to Mismaʿ.

O Mismaʿ of goodness, whom shall we call when

One of the calamities befalls the people and they fall into discord?

O Mismaʿ, for Iraq, which has no leader,

Through whom, we wonder, can the vulnerable man under suspicion find safety?

Those eyes in the city, grief-stricken,

Weep for you, since the shrouds and the crumbling bank claimed you.

They have laid you to rest—a right hand never before laid to rest—

And generosity freely bestowed, when destruction carried you off.

You were the meteor with which the enemy was pelted,

And the sea from which bucketfuls of bounty were drawn.
