ولما رأيت سراةَ قومي

سكوناً لا يثوب لهم زعيم

And when I saw the chieftains of my people

And when I saw the nobles of my people

standing still, with no leader returning to rally them,

motionless, with no leader returning to them,

هتفت بمسمع وصدى أميرٍ

هتفت بمسمع وصدى أميرٍ

وقبرِ معمّرٍ تلك القروم

وقبرِ معمّرٍ تلك القروم

I called upon Musmiʿ and the shade of Amir,

I called out to Mismaʿ and the shade of Amīr,

and Muʿammar’s grave—those were the mighty lords.

and to Muʿammar’s grave—those mighty chiefs.
