By your life, when I entrust my need

to you, Abu Sasan, I am ill-guided.

For you know neither the unseen nor whence its harm comes,

nor fear tales being spread tomorrow.

If only death's vicissitudes had borne me away,

so I would not have sought kindness from the grudging giver.

For had you been freeborn, O Hudayn son of Mundhir,

you would have met my needs and not stood inert.

You scowled at me, fearing to offer hospitality, and cast me aside,

and you were short of reach, not invested with honor.

You went no further than what you were fit for

in baseness, O son of the abased, enslaved man [reading uncertain].

    تجد ماجداً بالجود منشرح الصدرِ

    So, setting out, do not pass over Sulayman, lord of eminence;

you will find a noble man, open-hearted in generosity,

generous despite his faults, dispensing bounty,

and drinking it tawny and sweet-scented,

aged, like musk; its wafting scent drives away

the head-cold, and calls a man to give of his abundance.

It leaves the man who sips a cup of it reeling,

swaying as the sinner swayed with drunkenness.

It gleams like a cock's eye; its bubbles leap

when mixed with water, like the blaze of embers.

Such is the wine when you drink with one of Marthad's house,

a companion over it who keeps holding forth on honor.

He conceals you—'blood-feuds' [wording unclear]—and at times brings them back

upon you—'May God give you life!'—without knowing.

He has made it his habit never to act rashly over it,

and to offer kindness in hardship and ease.

Indeed, Sulayman son of Amr son of Marthad

has sworn an oath to enrich, not impoverish.

So his ambition is to give bounty and build high renown,

and strike champions' necks clean off in war.

And in peace he never ceases sipping aged wine,

when night grows dark, until the brightness of dawn.
