صاحبت عمراً زماناً ثم قلتُ له

صاحبت عمراً زماناً ثم قلتُ له

إلحق بقومك يا عمرو بن صوحانا

إلحق بقومك يا عمرو بن صوحانا

I kept ʿAmr company for a time, then said to him:

I kept Amr company for a time, then said to him:

“Go join your people, O ʿAmr, son of Ṣawḥān.

Join your people, O Amr ibn Sawhan.

فإن صبرتَ فإنّ الصبرَ مكرمةٌ

فإن صبرتَ فإنّ الصبرَ مكرمةٌ

وإن جزَعتَ فقد كان الذي كانا

وإن جزَعتَ فقد كان الذي كانا

For if you endure, endurance is an honor;

For if you are patient, patience is a noble virtue;

and if you lose heart, what has happened has happened.”

And if you give way to grief, what has happened has already happened.
