وَمَزرورِand buttoned القَميصِshirt عَلىupon اِنشِمارِslenderness
وَمَزرورِ القَميصِ عَلى اِنشِمارِ
With a tightly knit back, compactly joined,
With a firmly knit back, compactly built,
and a buttoned coat over a trim, ready frame,
And a shirt buttoned tight over a trim frame,
يُريكَshows you جَبينُهُhis forehead لَمَعانَthe gleam of بَرقٍlightning
يُريكَ جَبينُهُ لَمَعانَ بَرقٍ
وَسائِرُand the rest of جِسمِهِhis body لَمَعانَthe gleam of قارِpitch
وَسائِرُ جِسمِهِ لَمَعانَ قارِ
his forehead shows you the flash of lightning,
His forehead shows you the gleam of lightning,
while all the rest of his body gleams like pitch.
And the rest of his body, the gleam of pitch.
فَيُشبِهُso he resembles تَحتَbeneath جَنحِwing اللَيلِthe night لَيلاًnight
فَيُشبِهُ تَحتَ جَنحِ اللَيلِ لَيلاً
وَيَحكيand resembles الخالَthe beauty mark فيin خَدِّcheek النَهارِthe day
وَيَحكي الخالَ في خَدِّ النَهارِ
Beneath the wing of night, he thus resembles night itself,
So beneath the wing of night, he resembles night,
and is like the beauty mark upon daylight’s cheek.
And is like a beauty mark upon the cheek of day.
وَيُقبِلُand he approaches حينَwhen يُقبِلُhe approaches فيin سُمُوٍّloftiness
وَيُقبِلُ حينَ يُقبِلُ في سُمُوٍّ
وَيُدبِرُand he turns away حينَwhen يُدبِرُhe turns away فيin اِنحِدارِdescent
وَيُدبِرُ حينَ يُدبِرُ في اِنحِدارِ
When he advances, he advances with an upward sweep,
And when he approaches, he comes rising high,
and when he retreats, he retreats in a downward slope.
And when he turns away, he goes sloping down.
وَيُمسِكُand he stands still وَهوَwhile he is كَالفَدَنِlike a palace المُعَلّىlofty
وَيُمسِكُ وَهوَ كَالفَدَنِ المُعَلّى
وَيُحضِرُand he gallops وَهوَwhile he is كَالمَسَدِlike a rope المُغارِtightly twisted
وَيُحضِرُ وَهوَ كَالمَسَدِ المُغارِ
Standing still, he is like a towering palace;
And he stands still, like a lofty palace,
at full gallop, like a tightly twisted rope.
And he gallops, like a tightly twisted rope.
يَلوحُgleams البَدرُthe full moon مِنهُfrom him فيin جَبينٍa forehead
يَلوحُ البَدرُ مِنهُ في جَبينٍ
وَتَتَّضِحُand stands out clearly الثُرَيّاthe Pleiades فيin عِذارِa cheek
وَتَتَّضِحُ الثُرَيّا في عِذارِ
The full moon gleams from him upon his brow,
The full moon gleams from his forehead,
and the Pleiades shine clear along his cheek.
And the Pleiades stand out upon his cheek.
