إِذاwhen تَحَلّىhe adorns himself بِالعِذارِwith cheek-down وَمَشىand walks
إِذا تَحَلّى بِالعِذارِ وَمَشى
قُلتَyou would say فَتاةٌa maiden تَتَصَدّىmakes advances لِفَتىto a youth
قُلتَ فَتاةٌ تَتَصَدّى لِفَتى
When he adorns himself with cheek-down and walks,
When adorned with bashfulness she walks,
You would say: a maiden making advances to a youth.
You'd say, "A girl defying a youth;"
كَأَنَّهُas though he were تَحتَbeneath الحِلِيِّthe jewelry رَوضَةٌa garden
كَأَنَّهُ تَحتَ الحِلِيِّ رَوضَةٌ
دَرَّmade flow عَلَيهاupon it الزَهرُthe blossoms أَخلافَthe udders of الحَياthe rain
دَرَّ عَلَيها الزَهرُ أَخلافَ الحَيا
Beneath his jewelry, he is like a garden;
As though beneath her necklaces a garden,
The blossoms have made rain’s udders flow upon it.
Where flowers succeed each other in bloom.
