فَوافَتنا عَلى خُضرٍ نَضيرِ

We summoned the radiant full moon’s rival;

We invited the rival of the radiant full moon,

and she came to us upon fresh green [things],

So she came to us upon fresh greenery,

مُطَرَّزَةَ الشَوارِبَ بِالغَوالي

مُطَرَّزَةَ الشَوارِبَ بِالغَوالي

مُضَمَّخَةَ السَوالِفَ بِالعَبيرِ

مُضَمَّخَةَ السَوالِفَ بِالعَبيرِ

her upper lip embroidered with precious perfumes,

Her upper-lip hair embroidered with rich perfumes,

her side-locks steeped in fragrance.

The sides of her neck steeped in fragrance.

تَرى ما شِئتَ مِن قَدٍّ رَشيقِ

تَرى ما شِئتَ مِن قَدٍّ رَشيقِ

وَما أَحبَبتَ مِن رَدفٍ وَثيرِ

وَما أَحبَبتَ مِن رَدفٍ وَثيرِ

You see whatever slender, graceful figure you wish,

You see all you wish for in a slender, graceful figure,

and whatever soft, ample rump you desire.

And all you desire in soft, full buttocks.

أُلامِسُها وَقَد لَبِسَت حَريراً

أُلامِسُها وَقَد لَبِسَت حَريراً

فَأَحسَبُها حَريراً في حَريرِ

فَأَحسَبُها حَريراً في حَريرِ

I touch her while she is clad in silk,

I touch her while she is dressed in silk,

and take her for silk within silk.

So I take her for silk within silk.

فَأُنسٌ ثُمَّ لَهوٌ ثُمَّ زَهرٌ

فَأُنسٌ ثُمَّ لَهوٌ ثُمَّ زَهرٌ

سُرورٌ في سُرورٍ في سُرورِ

سُرورٌ في سُرورٍ في سُرورِ

So there is intimacy, then play, then flowers—

So companionship, then merriment, then blossoms—

joy within joy within joy.
