لَناwe have سَيِّدٌa lord واحِدٌone ماجِدٌnoble
يُقَتِّلُhe slaughters فيin الجودِgenerosity آباءَهُhis forefathers
We have a single, noble lord,
We have one glorious master
who slaughters his forefathers in generosity.
Who surpasses his forefathers in generosity
لَئيمٌa miser إِذاwhen جاءَهُcomes to him طارِقٌa visitor
فَقَدthen indeed جاءَهُhas come to him كُلَّall ماthat which ساءَهُdispleases him
A miser—when a visitor comes to him,
He is vile when visited by an unwelcome guest
everything that displeases him has come to him.
For he has been visited by all that displeased him
وَهَلand do يَطمَعُhope الناسُthe people فيfor خُبزِهِhis bread
إِذاwhen كانَhe is يَمنَعُهُمdenying them ماءُهُhis water
And do people hope for his bread
Do people hope for his bread
when he denies them his water?
When he denies them even his water
فَلَوfor if وَلَغَlapped الكَلبُthe dog فيin لُؤمِهِhis meanness
لَماit would not زالَcease يَقذُفُvomiting أَمعاءُهُits entrails
For if a dog lapped at his meanness,
Even if a dog rolled in his vomit
it would never cease vomiting its entrails.
He would go on spewing his guts
