لَبِسَdonned الماءُthe water وَالهَواءُand the air صَفاءَclarity
وَاِكتَسىand clothed itself الرَوضُthe garden بَهجَةًdelight وَبَهاءَand splendor
Water and air donned purity,
Water and air have donned clarity,
and the meadow clothed itself in joy and splendor.
And the garden has clothed itself in delight and splendor.
فَكَأَنَّso it is as though النِهاءَthe pools صِرنَthey became رِياضاًgardens
وَكَأَنَّand it is as though الرِياضَthe gardens عُدنَthey turned into نِهاءَpools
The pools seemed to have become gardens,
So it is as though the pools have become gardens,
and the gardens seemed to have turned to pools.
And as though the gardens have turned into pools;
وَكَأَنَّand it is as though الهَواءَthe air صارَbecame رَحيقاًpure wine
وَكَأَنَّand it is as though الرَحيقَthe pure wine صارَbecame هَواءَair
The air seemed to have become pure wine,
And as though the air has become pure wine,
and the pure wine seemed to have become air.
And as though pure wine has become air.
وَتَخالُand you imagine السَماءَthe sky بِاللَيلِat night أَرضاًearth
وَتَرىand you see الأَرضَthe earth بِالنَهارِby day سَماءَsky
By night, you would take the sky for earth,
And you imagine the sky at night to be earth,
and by day, you would see the earth as sky.
And see the earth by day as sky.
جَلَّلَتهاcloaked it الأَنواءُthe rains زَهراًblossoms وَصُفراًand yellow ones
يَومَon the day ظَلَّتit continued تُنادِمُdrinking in company with الأَنواءَthe rains
The rain clouds mantled her in white and yellow blooms,
The rains cloaked it in blossoms and yellow blooms,
the day she sat drinking with the rain clouds.
On the day it kept drinking in the rains' company.
فَتَراهاso you see it ماemphatic particle بَينَbetween نَوءٍa rain shower وَنَورٍand blossoms
تَتَكافاis evenly balanced تَبَسُّماًsmiling وَبُكاءَand weeping
Thus you see her, poised between rain and bloom,
So you see it between a rain shower and blossoms,
balancing smiles and tears.
Smiling and weeping in equal measure.
وَتَظَلُّand keep الأَشجارُthe trees تَتَّخِذُtaking الحُسنَbeauty
قَميصاًas a shirt أَوِor الجَمالَloveliness رِداءَas a cloak
The trees remain, making beauty
And the trees keep taking beauty
a shirt, or loveliness a cloak.
As a shirt, or loveliness as a cloak.
لَبِسَتthey donned حينَwhen أَثمَرَتthey bore fruit خُلُداتٍearrings
وَإِكتَسَتand clothed themselves حينَwhen أَورَقَتthey put forth leaves سيراءَstriped silk
When they bore fruit, they put on earrings,
They donned earrings when they bore fruit,
and when they leafed, they arrayed themselves in striped silk.
And clothed themselves in striped silk when they put forth leaves.
وَتَرىand you see السَروَthe cypresses كَالمَنابِرَlike the pulpits تَزهىstanding proud
وَتَرىand you see الطَيرَthe birds فَوقَهاabove them خُطَباءَpreachers
You see the cypresses, like pulpits, standing resplendent,
And you see the cypresses, like pulpits, standing proud,
and see the birds above them as preachers.
And see the birds above them as preachers.
