To the son of those who built up rich bounties with sword-edges,

And showered all mankind with gifts and rich bounties.

When they seek life's ease and sweetness,

Then amid death-driving forces and stone-pelting storms.

When white swords are stars amid black clouds of battle-dust,

    Setting, plunging into throats and withers;

And lean steeds bear them on the day of battle,

Raising their tails as they go to battle, like scorpions.

And how many a stand of theirs amid terror, and a charge,

Have death's daughters roused from every side,

Turning steeds beneath the dust cloud of battle

Into riderless mounts, or leading them among spare horses,

With a polished white sword, as though its edge bore

Notches from its cleaving through the bodies it strikes.
