عَلىin الرُغمِspite مِنof أَنفِthe nose of المَكارِمِnoble virtues وَالعُلاand eminence
غَدَتbecame دارُهُhis house قَفراًdesolate وَمَغناهُand his dwelling بَلقَعاa barren waste
To the grief of noble deeds and lofty glory,
With the nose of noble virtues and eminence rubbed in the dust,
his home became desolate, his dwelling a barren waste.
his house has become desolate, and his dwelling a barren waste.
أَلَمdid ... not? تَرَyou see أَنَّthat البَأسَvalor أَصبَحَhas become بَعدَهُafter him
أَشَلَّpalsied وَأَنَّand that الجودَgenerosity أَصبَحَhas become أَجدَعاwith its nose cut off
Do you not see that valor, after him, has become
Have you not seen that valor, after him, has become
paralyzed, and generosity has become maimed?
palsied, and that generosity has been shorn of its nose?
فَمُرّاso both of you pass عَلىby قَبرِthe grave of المُسَوَّدِthe chief وَاِنظُراand both of you look
إِلىat المَجدِglory وَالعَلياءِand eminence كَيفَhow تَخَشَّعاboth have humbled themselves
Pass by the grave of the revered chief, you two, and behold
So you two, pass by the chief's grave and look
glory and exalted rank—how they have bowed low.
at glory and eminence—how both have bowed in humility.
فَإِنso if يَكُit be واراهُhas covered him التُرابُthe earth فَكَبِّراthen both of you say 'God is greatest'
عَلىover الجودِgenerosity وَالمَعروفِand kindness وَالفَضلِand bounty أَربَعاfour times
Though the earth has covered him, pronounce four takbirs
So if the earth has covered him, you two proclaim 'God is greatest'
over generosity, kindness, and virtue.
over generosity, kindness, and bounty four times.
وَلاand do not تَسأَماboth of you grow weary نَوحاًlamentation عَلَيهِfor him مُكَرَّراًrepeated
وَنوحاًand lamentation لِفَقدِfor the loss of العارِفاتِbenefactions مُرَجَّعاrepeated in refrain
And never tire of wailing for him again and again,
And you two, do not tire of repeated lamentation for him,
or of echoing laments for the loss of noble benefactions.
nor of lamentation in refrain for the loss of benefactions.
فَماfor ... not كانَwas قَيسٌQays هَلكُهُhis death هَلكٌa death واحِدٌsingle
وَلَكِنَّهُbut he بُنيانُthe edifice of قَومٍa people تَضَعضَعاcrumbled
For Qays's death was no single death;
For Qays's death was not the death of just one man,
rather, a whole people's edifice collapsed.
but the collapse of a people's edifice.
وَلاand do not تَحسَباboth of you think أَنّيthat I أُواريهِbury him وَحدَهُhim alone
وَلَكِنَّنيbut I وارَيتُهُburied him وَالنَدىand generosity مَعاtogether
Do not suppose, you two, that I bury him alone:
And you two, do not think that I bury only him;
I have buried him and munificence together.
rather, I have buried him and generosity together.
