هذه دولة تدولُ لأشرا

هذه دولة تدولُ لأشرا

رٍ وتنبُو عن خيرةٍ أبرارِ

This is a turn of fortune that favors the wicked

This is a state that goes around for the wicked

and shuns the best, the righteous.

And grows for the righteous and pious

وزمانٌ فقدتُهُ من زمانٍ

وزمانٌ فقدتُهُ من زمانٍ

قد طوى خيرَه عن الأخيارِ

قد طوى خيرَه عن الأخيارِ

And an age—may I be rid of such an age!—

And a time that I have lost from a time

has folded its bounty away from the virtuous.

That has folded its good from the virtuous

يا لئيمَ النجاء عِش في نَعيم

يا لئيمَ النجاء عِش في نَعيم

ودَعِ البؤسَ للكريمِ النجارِ

ودَعِ البؤسَ للكريمِ النجارِ

O you of ignoble [stock?], live in bliss,

O you who live in luxury live in bliss

and leave misery to the man of noble lineage.

And leave misery for the generous carpenter

عِش كما شئتَ فالزمانُ حمارٌ

عِش كما شئتَ فالزمانُ حمارٌ

ليسَ يصفو إلا لكلِّ حمارِ

ليسَ يصفو إلا لكلِّ حمارِ

Live as you please, for the age is a donkey;

Live as you wish for time is a donkey

it is kind to none but donkeys.

That only clears for every donkey
